A portion of PICTO member subscriptions are donated to community-based IT initiatives in the Pacific Islands. Currently, PICTO supports HELP Community Telecentre in Papua New Guinea. HELP is a non-governmental development organization, established in Wewak in 1998. HELP is an acronym denoting Health, Education, Livelihood and Participation. HELP provides IT and communication services to Wewak and surrounding villages through a multi-media telecentre. PICTO donations will contribute to the training and employment costs of local IT specialists who support the telecentre operations. Expatriate IT professionals can contribute much to the development of the Pacific Islands not just through paid employment but through volunteer work as well. If you’re looking for somewhere to spend part of a gap year overseas check the volunteer section of our opportunities page.
